Episode 15 – The Three Books (Part 1)

Okay – so it’s really only two books. We cover The English Book of Common Prayer, the English Civil War, and Oliver Cromwell. Then we talk about The English-American and Cromwell’s Western Design, including Thomas Gage, Diego Lucifer, and Henry Morgan.

  1. Great series, really enjoying it I have to say. However I thought your treatment of Cromwell a bit generous. In his war of the three kingdoms you mention England and Scotland but kind of glide over the ethnic cleansing he set about in Ireland. ‘total of
618,000 deaths from fighting and disease out of a total pre-war population of c. 1.5 million, or 41 per cent of the population. No figures are given for transportation to Barbados….’. http://www.historyireland.com/cromwell/how-many-died-during-cromwells-campaign/

The only critic of Cromwell you mention was Churchill who himself came from a branch of the English Royal Family. His perspective on old cromy would surely have been slightly biased.

Anyway other than this slight oversight, it’s been a fantastic listen and keep up the good work.
