A Podcast About the Real Men & Women Behind the Golden Age of Piracy
Treasure Island
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson is perhaps the most famous pirate story ever told. Characters like Long John Silver, Doctor Livesey, Billy Bones, and the young Jim Hawkins have been ingrained in the popular culture. Locations like The Admiral Benbow Inn, the ship Hispaniola, and the titular Treasure Island have ignited imaginations for generations.
Stevenson published his stories between 1881 and 1882 through serial releases in boy’s adventure magazines. In 1883 the full manuscript was published and became an instant hit all around the world. Treasure Island has inspired novelists like John Steinbeck (Cup of Gold), playwrights like J.M. Barrie (Peter Pan), and film makers for decades, most recently in the TV show Black Sails.
I first read Treasure Island as a boy, and it held pride of place on my bookshelf next to the stories of Middle Earth, King Arthur, and Robin Hood. And my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles VHS. Now, I’m reading the story for you. These chapter readings are free for you and your children to enjoy, available to stream or download right here. I hope you enjoy.
